Fire Chief: Smoke Alarms Save Family From House Fire

SMITHFIELD – Smithfield Fire Chief Jeremey Daughtry is crediting working smoke detectors with saving a family of four from an early morning house fire.

Around 4:47am today (Tuesday), smoke detectors inside a home at 105 Shady Lane Drive in West Smithfield awakened two adults and two children their house was on fire.

Smithfield, Selma and Wilson’s Mills Fire responded. The first Smithfield fire unit to arrive reported heavy smoke from the carport and attic spaces.

Chief Daughtry said the fire was brought under control within 25 minutes.

One occupant was transported to the hospital for evaluation.

Chief Daughtry said the working smoke alarms saved the lives of the family. If the smoke detectors had not be in place, it may have been a different outcome.

The family was able to escape with a dog and two “bunnies” who avoided injury.

The fire caused severe damage but thanks to the quick response of firefighters a good amount of property is salvageable.

The Johnston County Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating the origin and cause.
