NEWTON GROVE – A rural Johnston County home burned to the ground. Around 6:15am Sunday, a passing motorist reported the blaze at 571 Thornton Road, just off Reedy Prong Church Road, not far from the Sampson County line.
Firefighters arrived on the scene and found the home fully engulfed in flames.
Officials said the house had been vacant for at least 15 years. There was no power connected to the house. Tax records indicate the 1,560 square foot home was built in 1927.
The Johnston County Fire Marshal and Johnston County Sheriff’s Office are jointly investigating the cause.
No injuries were reported.
