Ford Mustang Seized, Driver Arrested Following 100+ MPH Chase, Police Say
WILSON’S MILLS – A Smithfield teenager was arrested after he reportedly led law enforcement officers on a high speed chase. It started Sunday, July 9th at 9:54pm.
A Wilson’s Mills police officer was traveling westbound on US 70 Business and clocked a black Ford Mustang traveling eastbound at speeds over 100 mph in a 55 mph zone. The officer turned around and eventually caught up to the Mustang, which was still traveling eastbound at a high rate of speed.
According to Police Chief A.Z. Williams, the fleeing driver refused to stop for the officer’s blue lights and siren. The chased continued on US Highway 70 and then onto Swift Creek Road. While traveling south on Swift Creek Road, the suspect turned off the headlights and taillights. Near the Johnston County Regional Airport, the driver nearly lost control and went into the oncoming lane.
After traveling another half-mile, the driver finally stopped in front of the airport.
Police conducted a high-risk traffic stop. The driver, identified as Aaron Matthew Sperling, age 18, of Smithfield was arrested without further incident. Sperling was charged with felony fleeing to elude arrest with a motor vehicle, speeding 102 mph in a 55 mph zone, and reckless driving.
Sperling was given a $25,000 bond at the Johnston County Jail.
Chief Williams said the Ford Mustang was seized under the NC Run and Done law.

When a spoiled irresponsible child decides to run from law enforcement it then puts the officers and anyone on the road in immediate danger. Should be treated the same as pointing a gun at someone. You’re no better than a drunk driver.
