Former Police Officer Charged After Infant Suffers Multiple Broken Bones

ARCHER LODGE, N.C. – A former police officer is being held under a $2.5 million bond after Johnston County sheriff’s detectives charged him with two felony child abuse offenses involving a 6-month-old infant.

Adrian Torres Jr. of Archer Lodge was arrested Sept. 14 and charged with two counts of intentional child abuse causing serious physical injury.

Authorities said the investigation began after the infant’s mother returned home Sept. 8 and noticed an injury to the child’s leg.

She took the infant to an urgent care facility in Wake County. The child was later transferred to WakeMed in Raleigh.

Medical examinations allegedly determined the infant had suffered a broken right femur and a broken right wrist. Investigators said the child had also sustained a broken left femur, an injury believed to have occurred approximately one week earlier.

On Sept. 9, before the Johnston County Sheriff’s Office was notified about the injured child, deputies received an unrelated request to conduct a welfare check on Torres at his home.

Deputies went to the residence but were unable to make contact with anyone and left.

Later, deputies responded to another call reporting a suspicious person who appeared to be passed out in the front yard of a home on Cecil Road with a firearm in a holster.

Deputies located Torres at the scene. Based on statements he made, authorities said he was transported to a hospital for medical evaluation.

A short time later, sheriff’s detectives were notified about the injured infant and began their investigation.

Torres was arrested Sept. 14 upon his release from the hospital.

He was initially held without bond. Following his first court appearance, bond was set at $2.5 million.

Torres reportedly previously worked for the General Assembly Police Department in Raleigh but is no longer employed there.

JoCoReport reached out to General Assembly Police for additional details about Torres’ employment, but they did not respond to an email request seeking more information. It remains unknown if Torres resigned or was terminated from his position.

The Johnston County Sheriff’s Office said the investigation remains ongoing.
