Former Prison Nurse Arrested by NC SBI

SMITHFIELD – The NC State Bureau of Investigation has charged a former prison nurse with stealing narcotics prescribed to an inmate.
On September 1, 2022, the SBI was contacted by Johnston Correctional Institution (JCI) to investigate allegations of missing medications from the JCI Pharmacy.
Following an investigation, on November 2, 2022, SBI agents arrested Jennifer Broughton Gautier, age 45, of Brogden Road, Smithfield and charged her with one count of embezzlement of a controlled substance by an employee of a DEA registrant. According to the arrest warrant, the alleged theft occurred on August 20, 2022.
According to the warrant, Gautier took an undisclosed number of oxycodone pills, a schedule II controlled substance, “…which was prescribed to an inmate at Johnston Correctional Institution for personal use while working as a nurse in the JCI pharmacy.”
After appearing before a magistrate, Gautier was issued a $30,000 secured bond.
According to the NC Department of Public Safety, Gautier was employed by an outside nursing agency and was not a state employee. She reportedly began work at Johnston Correctional in March 2021 and resigned on or around October 22, 2022.

Like Forrest Gump said, Stupid is as Stupid does.
If we only knew how many People in Johnston County that have very important jobs in our community that are on drugs… Just because people are a nurse or Doctors they are still human and can become addicted to any type of drugs. If they would do more drug test on them type of jobs a lot of people wouldn’t be working…
what saves them from is drug testing isn’t cheap and most places aren’t going to spend the money to randomly drug test their employees. Should they? Yes they should honestly but I wouldn’t hold my breath to see.
When is the govt gonna get these people help that we’re given wayaaaay too strong of an opioid for a minor injury? It happened to me and I’m one of those people you speak of that gets you everyday and supports a family but is being held in the depths of opioid addiction just to be able to go work…I can’t afford rehab but I’d go tomorrow….and I kno a dozen more under 40 that are good people that just need a little break
