Bridges will be rebuilt one at a time
Four bridges in Wilson County will be replaced over the coming years, thanks to a nearly $2.1 million grant the N.C. Department of Transportation recently awarded.
National Bridge Builders Inc. of Kernersville will close, then demolish and replace bridges at the following locations:
- On Sharpe Store Road over a Town Creek tributary, south of Sharpsburg. Built in 1952;
- On Sharpe Store Road over Town Swamp, outside Elm City. Built in 1952;
- On Rock Quarry Road over a Town Creek tributary, south of Sharpsburg. Built in 1950; and
- On Bridgersville Road over Cattail Swamp, east of Elm City. Built in 1920.
In most cases, the bridges have become structurally deficient, which means that while they remain safe for the public, they increasingly require maintenance due to aging bridge structures.
The contractor will replace one bridge at a time, and a construction schedule will be developed later. Work will begin this fall, and the contractor has until the spring of 2021 to complete all four projects.
