Fraudulent Callers Impersonating The Wayne County Day Reporting Center

WAYNE COUNTY, N.C. — Officials are warning residents about a phone scam in which callers falsely claim to represent the Wayne County Day Reporting Center (DRC) and local law enforcement agencies in an effort to pressure victims into sending money.

According to the Wayne County Day Reporting Center, multiple residents have recently reported receiving suspicious calls and text messages from scammers demanding payment. In some cases, callers allegedly offered to meet victims in person at the Day Reporting Center to collect money.

Officials said the scammers appear to be using detailed personal information and local references to make the scheme seem legitimate.

Among the tactics reported:

  • Using residents’ names and home addresses
  • Mentioning real law enforcement officers by name
  • Referencing local locations, including the Day Reporting Center
  • Claiming to work alongside local police agencies
  • Sending text messages containing payment links
  • Offering in-person cash pickups at the DRC location

The Day Reporting Center emphasized it does not collect fees or demand money related to supervision or case management. Officials said any request for payment claiming to come from the agency should be considered fraudulent.

Authorities are urging residents not to send money, click suspicious links, or provide personal or financial information to unsolicited callers. Anyone who receives a questionable call or text is encouraged to hang up and contact the Day Reporting Center directly to verify whether the communication is legitimate.

Residents are also encouraged to report suspected scam activity to local law enforcement.
