A fuel truck driver was able to fend off a would-be robber during a confrontation at a local convenience store. The incident occurred around 2:15am Sunday at Jimmy’s convenience store at the intersection of US 70 Business and Swift Creek Road near Smithfield.
A 55 year-old driver was filling a fuel tank at the business when a gold car pulled into the parking lot and stopped on the opposite side of his tanker truck. The suspect then approached the driver and demanded he hand over his wallet.
Instead of complying, deputies said the driver retrieved a hammer laying nearby and told the suspect, “You want to play, we’ll play.” The suspect ran back to his vehicle and sped away. The driver was not harmed.
Anyone with information about the attempted robbery is asked to contact the Johnston County Sheriff’s Office at 919-989-5000.
