Grady Named Interim Police Chief

James Grady

SMITHFIELD – Town Manager Mike Scott has named Captain James Grady the interim Smithfield police chief. Captain Grady has been the acting chief since former chief Keith Powell retired in October 2022.

The Town has hired The Maps Group to assist with the search for a permanent chief. The search still continues and additional applications are being accepted.

“The Maps Group has been doing a great job working with Town staff and the chief applicants to move this process along. The timeline to name a new Chief is fluid. We have had some key candidates take positions in other jurisdictions so we are taking a step back and seeking additional applications to make sure we are getting the very best selection of candidates available to fill the Chief’s position,” Mr. Scott said.

“Captain Grady has been doing a good job running the day to day operations of the police department and I want to make sure this continues. Therefore, Captain Grady received the interim promotion, effect Monday, February 6th. I have great confidence that he will continue working with the public and the police department staff to maintain the high level of integrity that has been instilled in every member of the agency and continue to keep the trust of our citizens,” Town Manager Scott said.
