Gunfire Injures 3 In Benson

Benson Police are investigating an early morning shooting that injured three people. Police responded to a report of multiple shots being fired in the Benson Housing Authority apartment complex on East Benton Street at South Whittington Street around 12:30am Saturday.

Upon arrival police found three people – two males and one female – who were injured. Police said two were struck directly by the gunfire. Police did not say how the third victim was injured.

EMS rushed the two male victims to a trauma center for treatment of their gunshot wounds. Their conditions were not immediately released by police. The female victim was treated and released at the scene.

WRAL reported one of the victims was a 15 year-old football player from South Johnston High School who had competed in a game just hours earlier. Police did not confirm that information, nor did they release the names of any of the victims.


Benson Police said the investigation is still on-going and officers are conducting follow-up interviews to obtain additional information. Police did confirm a person of interest has been identified. A motive was not disclosed.
