An attempted armed robbery at a Smithfield business was botched Tuesday night after the victim began laughing at the suspect. The incident happened just before 7:00pm at Crazy Taco at 911 South Fifth Street near Brogden Road.
A female employee had just stepped outside the business when she was approached by the suspect who was armed with a handgun. After the would-be robber demanded money, the victim laughed at the suspect and said she didn’t have any money. The suspect then turned and ran away on foot.
Police Captain R. Sheppard said no items were taken during the attempted holdup. A police K-9 was brought to the scene but was unsuccessful in tracking the suspect.
Anyone with information about the robbery – the third in Smithfield this month – is asked to contact the Smithfield Police Department at 919-934-2121. Callers can remain anonymous.
