Work will start this spring to replace a 56-year-old bridge five miles south of Fuquay-Varina.
Fred Smith Co. of Raleigh will demolish and construct a new bridge on Rawls Church Road over Hectors Creek, after the N.C. Department of Transportation awarded a nearly $800,000 contract this month.
The company is under contract to start between March 17 and April 28. Once underway, the contractor will have six months to complete the project and reopen the road.
The current bridge, which has vehicle weight restrictions, is deemed obsolete for today’s traffic. It is also nearing its lifespan.
The 6-mile detour during construction will send drivers onto U.S. 401, Baptist Grove Road and Christian Light Road.
