The Harrison Center for Active Aging located in Selma has been certified as a Center of Excellence by the Division of Aging and Adult Services of the State of North Carolina based on an on-site certification visit conducted last Friday. The certification is valid for a five year period.
There are 163 senior centers in North Carolina. Harrison is one of 96 that have achieved designation as a Center of Excellence.
The site review team that conducted the certification visit included representatives from the Division of Aging and Adult Services. Triangle-J Area Agency on Aging, peers from another senior center, and a representative from the Center for Aging Research and Educational Services (CARES) of the UNC School of Social Work.
In addition to the detailed on-site inspection, the process of certification takes a year and includes a 67-page, 43-question document detailing all activities and services that are provided at the center. Being able to successfully complete the certification process ensures that the senior center is operating in an optimal fashion to provide an exemplary environment for older adults.
The Harrison Center for Active Aging opened in June 2014 and currently serves hundreds of older adults throughout the Selma and Smithfield area.
