BENSON – Two people were killed and three others injured in a three vehicle accident on Interstate 95. The wreck was reported just after 3:30pm today (Thursday) near Benson.
An empty box van going northbound, reportedly headed from Fayetteville to Four Oaks, suddenly veered into the median, traveled through the center cable barrier, and collided head on with a southbound Toyota Tacoma pickup pulling a utility trailer.
During the collision, the utility trailer separated from the Toyota. The trailer was struck by a southbound vehicle, also towing a utility trailer, that could not stop in time.
The driver and passenger in the Toyota died at the scene. Both occupants in the box van were seriously injured and transported to WakeMed.
The driver of the second southbound vehicle sustained minor injuries but declined transport to the hospital.
The names of those involved has not been released.
Authorities are looking into if the box van had an issue with a tire that may have contributed to the deadly crash.
The State Highway Patrol is consulting with the Johnston County District Attorney’s Office about possible charges.
Interstate traffic backed up for several miles before all travel lanes could reopen Thursday evening.

My brother was driving the Toyota. We are in shock.
Prayers for your family. So sad.
Oh no. Praying for your family.
Glad you are ok
Prayers to all involved. I routinely travel from VA to FL on I95 and without a doubt from the NC/SC border to Wilson Co. it is absolutely awful. Construction and absolutely no law enforcement make it treacherous. I avoid it and will drive a lot out of the way to stay off of this section of roadway.
