Hidden Tracker Helps Nab Accused Building Materials Thief

CLAYTON – The long arm of the law caught up with an accused larceny suspect. A representative with The CHE Companies in Garner reported February 8 someone had stolen $2,320 in construction materials from a new home site on Shooting Star Lane near Clayton.

A tracking device had been hidden inside some of the materials. Johnston County deputies responded and began tracking the device, which led them to Lee County.

A U-Haul was parked at an address near Sanford and the stolen items were found in the rental truck.

Juan Rodriquez-Veliz, age 25, of Sanford reportedly claimed he had purchased the items lawfully. Rodriquez-Veliz was charged with felony larceny. At the time of his arrest, he was out of jail on bond for a larceny charge for the theft of construction materials in Wake County, in January 2024.
