Highway Patrol: Speed Apparent Factor In Fatal Crash

The Highway Patrol says speed may have been a contributing factor in Monday night’s fatal accident on Highway 42 East near Jerusalem Church Road.

Fatal-NC-42--222-4Louis Brandon Howell, 25, of Whitley Road, Middlesex died in the 6:26pm crash.  Troopers said a 2010 Dodge driven by Amanda Leigh-Ann Allen, 20, of Triston Road, Kenly was traveling eastbound on Highway 42 when she ran off the right shoulder, overcorrected, then traveled across the centerline slamming into Howell’s 1981 Chevy truck.  Howell died from his injuries.

Allen and two passengers were injured. One of the passengers, Samantha Allen, 22, of Lucama has now been released from the hospital. Allen and the second passenger, Amber Baker, 25, of Newton Grove were still hospitalized on Wednesday.

Trooper M.E. Sellers said he is consulting with the Johnston County District Attorney’s Office about possible charges.  Trooper Sellers says the investigating into the exact speed Allen were traveling and whether impairment played any factor was still continuing.
