Following a very expensive campaign, incumbent Second District Congressman George Holding defeated Linda Coleman on Tuesday.
Rep. Holding, whose district includes a portion of Johnston County, received 165,813 votes in the six county race to Coleman’s 148,247. Jeff Matemu, a Libertarian candidate, received 9,353 votes in unofficial returns.
Holding carried the most votes in Johnston, Franklin, Harnett, Nash and Wilson counties. Coleman carried more votes in Wake.
Holding received the most votes in 20 of the 24 voting precincts in Johnston County that are a part of the Second District. In Johnston County alone, Holding received 26,179 votes to 10,933 for Coleman and 1,390 for Matemu.
Holding previously served as the representative for the 13th Congressional District in North Carolina before winning election in 2016 in the 2nd Congressional District.
