Homeless Man Struck With Hammer, Robbed

SMITHFIELD — A homeless man said he was struck in the head with a hammer and robbed Monday night near the Neuse River Bridge.
The attack occurred around 9:52 p.m. on West Market Street, according to the Smithfield Police Department. The 53-year-old victim told officers he was pushing his bicycle when a stranger approached and struck him in the head before stealing the bicycle.
About an hour later, at approximately 10:46 p.m., officers located the suspect behind the Johnston County Public Library on East Market Street. Police said the suspect was in possession of the stolen bicycle.
Abdou Joof, 38, who is also listed as homeless, was charged with felony robbery with a dangerous weapon and misdemeanor assault with a deadly weapon.
The stolen bicycle was recovered. The victim was transported to the hospital for treatment of a possible concussion.
Police said the victim did not know the suspect. Joof was being held under a $50,000 secured bond.
