SHP: Winter Storm Leads To 82 Crashes, Dozens Of Calls For Service In Johnston County

JOHNSTON COUNTY — The State Highway Patrol has responded to 82 traffic collisions in Johnston County since a winter storm moved into the area over the weekend.

As of 6 p.m. Monday, troopers had also handled approximately 80 calls for service related to the storm, including reports of stranded motorists, according to First Sergeant Michael Goldsmith.

One of the collisions occurred Monday afternoon on Interstate 42 (US 70) at Clayton Boulevard. According to the Highway Patrol, a vehicle attempted to merge onto the I-42 at a speed unsafe for the icy conditions, lost control and struck another vehicle.

Both drivers were taken to local hospitals with minor injuries. The driver deemed at fault was cited for traveling too fast for road conditions.

Authorities continue to urge motorists to avoid unnecessary travel and to reduce speed while winter weather persists.
