Hunters Discover Human Remains Near Smithfield

SMITHFIELD — The Johnston County Sheriff’s Office is investigating after skeletal human remains were discovered Saturday morning near Smithfield.

Hunters found the remains along the edge of a wood line near the intersection of U.S. 70 Business East and Yelverton Grove Road. Deputies responded to the area and secured the scene.

The skeletal remains, along with clothing found at the site, were collected and sent to the North Carolina Office of the Chief Medical Examiner for examination and identification.

Investigators said an identification card was located among the clothing; however, officials are waiting for positive identification from the medical examiner before releasing the individual’s name.

The investigation remains ongoing pending results from the medical examiner’s office.
