A 60-day closure of the Interstate 95 southbound off ramp at Bagley Road (Exit 105) between Kenly and Micro in Johnston County is set to start at 8 PM (tonight) Monday, July 24th. The closure is needed to construct a roadway for the traffic shift on I-95 from existing bridges to new bridges over the Little River near the ramp.
While the ramp is closed, drivers needing to access Bagley Road will be detoured to Exit 102 (Micro Road), where a temporary traffic signal is in place to handle the expected increase in exit traffic. Drivers should turn left at the signal and go over the interstate, then left again on to I-95 northbound to get back to exit 105.
The work is part of a $12.9 million project to replace two 62-year-old bridges on I-95, the north and southbound structures over the Little River just north of exit 105. Each new bridge will have two travel lanes, but will be wide enough to accommodate four lanes of traffic each in the future. The new northbound bridge will also have an additional outside lane that will serve as part of the lengthened onramp for traffic merging on to I-95 from Bagley Road, giving drivers more time to merge.
Both bridges will remain open during the construction of their replacements, with some lane closures in place when necessary. The outside half of each new bridge will be built first while traffic continues using the existing bridges. Once this is complete, traffic will be shifted to the new outside half of each bridge. The original structures will then be demolished and the inside half of both new bridges will be completed.
The onramp to northbound I-95 from Bagley Road continues to be closed. It will remain shut down until the completion of the of the project, which is expected to be in October 2018.
