SELMA – All lanes of Interstate 95 in Selma reopened shortly before 4 o’clock this afternoon (Wednesday) following a serious crash near Selma.
Around 1:00PM, a tractor trailer was struck from behind by a recreational vehicle towing a car in the northbound lanes of I-95 near the Selma Flyover Bridge at Exit 97. The impact was so severe, the driver of the RV was pinned inside his vehicle.
The Selma, Smithfield, Micro and Pine Level Fire Departments worked for about an hour before they could free the driver. He was airlifted from the scene on a Life Flight helicopter to the hospital. A passenger in the RV was transported by Johnston County EMS to Wake Med.
Southbound lanes were closed while the helicopter landed at the scene and remained closed until it left with the patient. Northbound lanes reopened shortly before 4:00PM. Traffic was backed up in the northbound lanes to Four Oaks.
The cause of the accident remains under investigation by the NC Highway Patrol. The names of those involved was not immediately released.
