Impaired Driver Strikes Mother And Child Standing Beside Disabled Vehicle, SHP Says

BENSON – A Johnston County woman and her 1 year-old child sustained injuries after being struck by a suspected impaired driver.

The incident happened around 8:35pm Saturday on Highway 96 South, just south of Highway 50, in the Meadow community.

Authorities said Morgan Vogel, 34, of Dunn (a Johnston County address) was operating a passenger car when it became disabled on the northbound shoulder of Highway 96 South. A Johnston County deputy sheriff happened upon the disabled mother and child and stopped to assist. The deputy activated his blue lights and wig-wag headlights and parked on the southbound side of the road. Vogel and her infant child exited her vehicle.

Within moments, a 2012 Ford passenger car, operated by Jose Antonio Medina-Andino, 34, of Oak Lane, Dunn approached while traveling northbound. Medina-Andino failed to reduce speed and ran off the roadway to the right, striking the mother and child, then colliding with Vogel’s disabled car.

Vogel became trapped under Medina-Andino’s vehicle after the impact.

Meadow Fire and Johnston County EMS arrived and removed Vogel from underneath the vehicle.

Vogel and her child were transported to WakeMed for treatment. Vogel sustained serious injuries. The infant sustained non-life threatening injuries.

According to an accident report, Medina-Andinio was originally traveling at an estimated 45 mph in a 45 mph zone. He was traveling at approximately 20 mph when he struck the pedestrians and disabled car.

Medina-Andino is facing numerous charges including driving while impaired, no operator’s license, failure to reduce speed, and unlawfully passing an emergency/public service vehicle. He reportedly registered 0.16 on the Breathalyzer, double the legal limit of 0.08.

Highway 96 was closed for more than an hour until the scene could be cleared.

      • Congratulations for the longest sentence posted this week. Not to mention the ridiculous grammar and structure…..sheesh

        • He’s saying that white people are the devil and that we’re more likely to rape our kids because a Hispanic male hit two people while driving intoxicated. Anyone want to make any sense of those ramblings? Be my guest.

      • Umm I think I understand some of what your trying to say, but, look at the next story, that guy molesting kids aint White. They dont have to apologize for being white anymore. Those days are over. Your actions, effort and ability now matter. Equal opportunity instead of equity.

        • I don’t agree with the fool hitting this lady but I have to agree with joco born !! The white race is more likely to have sexual crimes against kids. It’s proven facts. Just look at how many cases have been just on this site How many teachers in schools have been white. I’m white myself but I have to agree with facts

  1. OK, I am sick and tired of reading/hearing about incidents like this. Almost always a non licensed, no insurance or revoked license, illegally in the USA the list goes on. Jail them upon arrest with no bond until further investigation Please!

  2. Mr. MEDINA-ANDINO Is very valuable and when if not all ready registered to vote via our motor-voter process when he got his valid ID and driver license will be a loyal Democrat voter over his lifetime. No one was killed here and he has the same rights as any of you so-called Johnston County Citizens who only has citizenship because your ancestors were sneaky enough to get across the border hundreds of year’s ago. This man pays taxes and his family deserves the same educational, medical and welfare services as the rest of you so-called Johnston County Citizens, let’s not forget an appointed lawyer too! Try to kick him out of the country and watch our Federal Activist Judges put a stop to it too!!!

    THE FIX IS IN!!!!

    • Do your eyes deceive you? The majority of hit and run, driving fatalities, no operators license and on and on is by the Hispanic community. Is what it is. Doesn’t make you racist for pointing out the obvious when this wasn’t a problem 15 years ago.

      • Traffic violations and hit-and-run incidents are influenced by many factors, including population growth, economic conditions, and law enforcement policies. While demographics in Johnston County have changed over the past 15 years, any claim about a specific group’s involvement in traffic violations should be based on objective data rather than assumptions.

If you’d like, I can help look for more detailed statistics that might provide clarity on this issue. Let me know 😉

  3. He had no license. Driving is a privilege and he lost his. He had no right being on the highway, not unless he was walking. Lol
Lock him up so he can’t drive.

  4. Wow. Back in years past there was zero crime in N.C. Nobody ever got in the driver’s seat of a vehicle without a valid license, proper equipment, and the maximum of coverage. The descendants of indigenous tribes/Spaniards are arrested at rates many times higher than C or AA folks. That’s Caucasian and African American. So if everybody from below the Texas border stayed home, boom. No. More. Criminal activity. Those for whom Latin folks are the most evil of all base their finger pointing on nothing besides their personal prejudice. In the Central and South American states, children can only attend school as long as their folks can pay. No money, no education. So our local immigrants are functionally illiterate in Spanish, totally illiterate in English, but still expected (by us) to understand traffic laws. it’s tempting to lump folks together (what would we have in common with a PhD. from Chicago? ) without thinking for one second how we might fare if the tables turned. Just a perspective from another angle.

  5. Not everything has to do with race. The focus should be on holding impaired drivers accountable, regardless of their background. Driving under the influence is a serious issue that affects everyone, and addressing it should be about safety and justice, not assumptions about someone’s legal status

    • So if someone breaks into your house and takes an apple they should only be charged with stealing the apple? Please post address…..I’m hungry.

      • Ah yes, the classic ‘stealing an apple is the same as endangering lives while driving drunk’ argument. Absolute genius. 🙄 I’d explain how false equivalences work, but I have a feeling critical thinking isn’t your strong suit. My point still stands—hold people accountable for their actions, not assumptions about their background. But hey, keep embarrassing yourself
