The Smithfield Town Council will hold a special meeting on Monday night, August 10th for the purpose of naming an interim town manager.  The meeting will be held at 6:00pm at the Town Hall and is open to the public.

Former Town Manager Paul Sabiston was fired Tuesday night in a 4-to-3 vote by the town council.  Sabiston’s termination was effective immediately. As part of his contract, he will be paid 50% of his one year salary as severance.

Sabiston, 51, a native of Marietta, Georgia began working as Smithfield Town Manager on April 16, 2012 replacing Eric Williams who was fired from his job in 2011.  Prior to coming to Smithfield, Sabiston had been the Interim Town Manager for the City of Boiling Lakes in Brunswick County since July 2011.

Sabiston previously served as a city manager in Roanoke Rapids and Shallotte. He was also the city administrator for Mexico Beach, Florida.

When he was hired in 2012, Sabiston told WTSB News “People need to have confidence in the city manager’s office.”
