For the second time in as many years, someone has stolen a tax refund from the same family.
A 50 year-old Kenly man filed his state and federal tax returns online several weeks ago. He received his state return without any problem. This week, he decided to check on the status of his IRS refund and determined his direct deposit had been diverted to another bank account and it had already been paid. The victim is now working with the IRS trying to recover his refund of $3,743.
The victim’s wife had her identity stolen in 2016 and her IRS refund was also stolen. Authorities don’t believe the two cases are connected but are investigating.
