SMITHFIELD – The Johnston Community College campus was temporarily placed on lockdown this morning (Thursday).
JCC President Dr. Vern Lindquist released a statement saying, “The Johnston County Public School System anonymous tip line received information this morning about a potentially armed student on his way to the Johnston Community College campus. Out of an abundance of caution, we locked down the campus. The student did not enter a campus building and was apprehended in the parking lot by authorities. The student was an Early College Academy student and is a minor. The Early College Academy is a JCPS high school on JCC’s campus.”
Smithfield Police Lt. T. West said officers responded to the JCC campus and located the 17 year-old in the parking lot before he entered the school building. The juvenile did not have a gun but did have a small amount of marijuana in his possession. He was released to his parents.
Dr. Lindquist added, “The student has been banned from JCC. We are thankful for the quick response by our Director of Campus Police & Security, the Smithfield Police Department, and the Johnston County Sheriff’s Office. The Smithfield Police Department is handling the investigation.”
Im sure now that he’s been publicly humiliated, criminally charged and kicked out of school related to an apparently false accusation he will head down right path
Tell us how it should have been handled
I guess in your world, false accusations are enough. RonJon should be worried.
You can be banned from going to school after having marijuana on campus?
According to the JCC website yes, that is in their policy.
Direct quote: “Therefore, the unlawful manufacture, distribution, possession or use of a controlled substance or of alcoholic beverages shall be prohibited while on College premises or as part of any College sponsored activities.
Any student violating this policy shall be subject to disciplinary action up to and including expulsion and referral for prosecution.”
Banned on hear say, no gun seems wrong to me
Banned on possession. Did you read the article?
They also need to go after the swatter for filing a false report. This didn’t hurt just the swatted student, but all the students and the college lost an hour to a false alarm. Allowing this with no consequences will encourage more people to do it. There’s also the “cry wolf” effect where repeated reports and alarms start being ignored.
So many of you folks apparently have some issue with this banning from campus.
The problem is YOU!!
Your total Ignorance is not bliss
If they banned students for possession, then a lot more students, and some teachers, would need to be escorted off.
Seems like there is some part of story missing,,,,maybe student has history of threats??
If this was pure swatting incident, school and law enforcement needs to apologize, and focus on finding the swatter.
