CLAYTON – Starting Monday, April 10, the final layer of pavement will be placed on the newly widened section of N.C. 42 East outside Clayton.

The final paving from the Neuse River bridge to Buffalo Road will take about a month, pending the weather, and will cause occasional delays and traffic backups, especially when paving through intersections. Drivers should remain alert throughout this corridor.

The contractor will use temporary lane markings as traffic is shifted from one lane to another.

After the paving is completed, it will take an additional month or two for the contractor to place permanent, high-visibility lane markings along the 4-mile route before the N.C. Department of Transportation can safely open all four lanes to traffic.

The department has kept the improved route in a two-lane pattern so minor work could be performed. That pattern will remain until the project is completed for the safety of construction crews and drivers.

    • I think they did an exceptional job within a reasonable amount of time. I lived in Pennsylvania for many years. You want to see endless construction? Move there. The stretch of I-78 between Hamburg and Allentown has been under construction for over 20 years. Seriously, over 20 years they have been messing up that stretch of highway with no apparent objective or end in sight.

  1. 2 deaths, countless wrecks, traffic forever……. It’s about time. And with all the new housing in the area since this boondoggle started it still won’t be enough to reduce traffic.

  2. They’ve been waiting on the concrete median at the Buffalo Rd intersection to cure for months now. This is the slowest road project I’ve ever seen. 540 will be complete before they get it done. Meanwhile, Rebecca Flowers has added another 45,000 houses.

    • Exactly Click, which is why this will have zero impact, other than cause more traffic, accidents, frustration and potentially more deaths. It’s almost as if they planned it this way. Boondoggle!!!!!! The English company should be fined for such a poor job. They had to tear up one of their medians by food Lion because they screwed its up so bad. Half the time there was no one working on the “project”.

    • Wasting tax payer money, over development, poor management, poor planning are a few things worth complaining about. Is that you kamala?

      • So making it easier for people to access their homes and shopping is wasting money. As I said, some of you will complain about everything and anything.

  3. No, the Orange Barrel Boulevard was in Charlotte at the end of Independence Boulevard. Was there so long the barrels dry rotted and had to be replaced, twice….. This one is a close second though/
