JCPS Approves $330,000 Football Helmet Reconditioning Contract
SMITHFIELD — Johnston County Public Schools will spend up to $330,000 over the next three years to have football helmets inspected, repaired and recertified.
The Johnston County Board of Education approved a three-year contract with Riddell during its October meeting.
The contract covers football helmets used at 21 middle and high schools across the district.
JCPS estimates as many as 1,750 helmets could require reconditioning each year.
The work includes taking the helmets apart, inspecting them for damage, cleaning and sanitizing them, making needed repairs, repainting and recertifying the helmets to meet safety standards.
Helmets that cannot be safely reconditioned would be identified and removed from use.
Under the district’s specifications, most helmets are expected to be returned by March 15 each year. High schools advancing into the football playoffs would have until April 1 to submit their equipment.
The three-year contract is not to exceed $330,000.

Before any of y’all get in an uproar or about the cost of this, they have been doing this every single year for decades. They’re simply reap approving the contract. This is about safety. It’s like changing the brake pads on school buses.
