MICRO – On Wednesday, March 6, 2024, the Johnston County School Nutrition Department hosted a “Surf’s Up with School Breakfast” event at Micro Elementary in celebration of National School Breakfast Week (NSBW) during March 4-8, 2024.
The campaign theme, “Surf’s Up with School Breakfast,” reminds the entire school community that school breakfast provides a healthy and energizing start to the day for students. The primary goal of the event was to encourage more families to take advantage of the healthy choices available with school breakfast.
“A healthy breakfast at the start of the day is a great way to ensure students are nourished and ready to learn,” said Jennifer Lawson, JCPS Director of School Nutrition Services. “The National School Breakfast celebration helps us educate parents and students about all the nutritious and delicious choices we offer.”
Studies show that students who eat school breakfast are more likely to reach higher levels of achievement in reading and math, score higher on standardized tests, have better concentration and memory, be more alert, and maintain a healthy weight.
“Seeing so many students excited to enjoy a healthy and delicious breakfast surrounded by caring School Nutrition Professionals, School Administrative staff, and so many supportive family members during Micro Elementary’s celebration of National School Breakfast Week confirms we are ensuring positive academic outcomes for our students, who are ready to engage and learn,” stated NCDPI Section Chief of School Nutrition Victoria Homick. “We are also building the foundation for future academic success for North Carolina students.”
Busy weekday mornings make it a challenge for many families to find time for a healthy breakfast. Fortunately, Johnston County Public Schools offers nutritious school breakfasts, complete with fruit and low-fat or fat-free milk, to ensure students are fueled for learning every school day.
Johnston County Public Schools provides breakfast at no cost to the household at 43 qualifying Community Eligibility Provision (CEP) locations. Biscuit varieties, belgian waffles, and yogurt breakfast boxes are a few of the most popular breakfast options among students.
