A teenager is accused of using counterfeit money to buy an item he saw for sale on the Internet.
In July, a woman placed her cell phone up for sale on OfferUp.com. A teen agreed to meet her at McGee’s Crossroads to buy the phone for $120. The victim didn’t realize it at the time but she had been paid with counterfeit $20 bills.
With the assistance of Dunn Police, 18 year-old Rolando Ismael Valdez of Keyman Drive, Coats was arrested by the Johnston County Sheriff’s Office this week. Valdez was charged with obtaining property by false pretenses and conspiracy. He was placed in the Johnston County Jail under a $120,000 bond.
Officers were able to recover the victims cell phone and return it to her.
