SMITHFIELD – The Johnston County Board of Elections will begin recounting all ballots cast in the November 3rd election on Friday, November 20th at 8:30am. This follows a statewide recount ordered in the race for the NC Supreme Court Chief Justice.
The Johnston County recount will take place at the Election Satellite Office located at 801 S. Third Street in Smithfield. The recount is open to the public; however, space is limited.
As of Tuesday, NC Supreme Court Justice Paul Newby led Chief Justice Cheri Beasley by fewer than 400 votes. More than 5.4 million ballots were cast in the statewide race. The margin was within a 0.5 percent threshold allowing the recount under state election law.
