Johnston County Intersection Will Become Roundabout

The intersection of NC 42 and NC 96 east of Clayton was converted to an all-way stop in 2019 but continues to see traffic accidents like this one in April 2019. The intersection will be upgraded to a roundabout. Johnston County Report Photo by John Payne

CLAYTON – A roundabout will be constructed at NC 42 and NC 96 under a newly approved $3.4 million contract.

The N.C. Department of Transportation made this location an all-way stop in 2019 as an interim safety measure, after an analysis showed the majority of crashes involved drivers on N.C. 96 failing to yield to traffic on N.C. 42.

Roundabouts help reduce congestion that is more typical with traditional intersections. A driver generally enters the roundabout more quickly than if waiting at a traffic signal. Additionally, people travel at slower speeds in a roundabout, improving safety.

S.T. Wooten Corp. of Wilson will start work this summer, and the company will have almost a year to complete the project. During construction, the intersection will have periodic closures consisting of one to two weeks at a time.

  1. It’s about time they figured out something this intersection has always been a mess, too many people obviously don’t know how a 4 way stop works anyway, too worried about themselves and their own agendas.

    • You took the words right out of my mouth. The selfishness and ignorance that I see on the road daily in our community alone is troubling. This used to be a wonderful place to live and everyone around was friendly and respectful up until the last few years. Now I almost hate where I live. Thanks to those who hated where they lived enough to move here and now they are turning this place into where they came from.

  2. So we’re going to spend $3,400,000 idiotically just because a few bad drivers can’t safely navigate an intersection that has a clear line of sight in all directions? I have never had a problem with that intersection and I travel through there frequently. This makes ZERO sense.

  3. Surprised it took them so long, the one at 39 and 42 works well. They should have done them both at the same time and gotten it over with but planners and dot aren’t that smart.

  4. They think a roundabout will help clear up accidents, people of NC get into accidents just standing still and 95% of nc drivers don’t even know how to drive properly anyways so this is just a waist of money and time on the drives when heading anywhere. Might as well put up stop lights at this point. The roundabout we have on 222 heading towards Clayton nc is trash and has seen over a dozen accidents in the past year but the county thinks they work well versus dumb people that don’t know when to yield for other cars. I’ve come to the realization that the governors and mayor’s and officials of NC are just morons.

  5. I wish they would do away with the idea 4way stops help anything!! No one seems to know how they work.

  6. No roundabouts do not work well! The one at 42 & 39 is a stupid nightmare. People on 42 don’t even yield, barely slow down. Risking your life to go thru it. I often go 42 to 96 for work, haven’t seen a problem there at all. Everybody takes turns. Now due to more construction, I’ll have to take another way to work. 42 has been nothing but a nightmare since they started construction. We take back roads as often as possible because of it & try not to even go to Clayton anymore. Too many dang rude people who don’t know how to drive now. Used to love this place but now wish I could afford to move away.
