Johnston County Joins Operation Green Light Ahead Of Veterans Day

SMITHFIELD — Johnston County residents and businesses are being encouraged to shine a green light this fall as a visible show of support for local veterans.

The Johnston County Board of Commissioners has again joined Operation Green Light for Veterans, a national initiative recognizing military veterans and the sacrifices they have made.

Participation is simple: replace one outdoor light bulb with a green bulb and keep it illuminated through Veterans Day.

“We invite all County residences and local businesses to show their support by simply changing one outdoor bulb to a green light,” said Robert Boyette, director of Johnston County Veterans Services. “By illuminating our storefronts and our homes, we send a powerful message to our local veterans that they are seen, appreciated and supported.”

Commissioners adopted a resolution supporting the program and also encouraged municipalities across Johnston County to display green lights at public buildings.

The resolution notes that approximately 200,000 service members transition from military to civilian life nationally each year and that the transition can present significant challenges.

Commissioners said recognizing and supporting veterans remains an important community responsibility.

“Johnston County appreciates the sacrifices of our United States military personnel and believes specific recognition should be granted,” the resolution states.

Operation Green Light is officially observed Nov. 4-11, but Johnston County is encouraging residents and businesses to begin displaying green lights earlier and keep them illuminated through Veterans Day on Nov. 11.

  1. More helpful than a green light would be a president who respects our members of the military and does not try to hold them hostage. Remember that Trump said no money for Cam Lejeune toxic water victims unles GOP wins midterms.

      • What Jerome? Do you deny that Trump tried to tie relief for Camp Lejeune toxic water to an election outcome that he favors?

President Trump suggested during his stump spech that monetary compensation for victims of contaminated water at Camp Lejeune hinged on Republicans winning control of Congress. Trump added that outstanding toxic water claims would be settled if his party wins the House and Senate in the midterm elections.
