Johnston County Roadway Improvements Will Ease Congestion

ARCHER LODGE, N.C. – The N.C. Department of Transportation has awarded a contract to widen a 1.5-mile section of Covered Bridge Road in Archer Lodge. The improvements will extend from west of Helena Lane to east of Buffalo Road.

The project will widen the existing two-lane roadway to three lanes, including an open center turn lane. Converting the corridor to a three-lane cross-section with dedicated left turn space will help reduce rear-end crashes, lessen congestion at busy intersections, and improve overall traffic flow for local and regional drivers.

As part of this project, South Murphrey Road and Archer Lodge Road will be realigned to form a new intersection with Covered Bridge Road. This new intersection will include a traffic signal to enhance safety and manage traffic more efficiently.

Additionally, a new traffic signal will be installed at Castleberry Road and Covered Bridge Road, and turn lanes will be added with an upgraded signal at Buffalo Road and Covered Bridge Road.

Carolina Sunrock LLC of Raleigh won the construction contract this week with a bid of $12.3 million, which was 13% below NCDOT’s engineering estimate. The company was the lowest responsive bidder among seven competing firms.

Construction may begin as early as this fall, and is expected to be completed by the summer of 2028.

  1. How does this help? The stop light at Buffalo road needs to be a protected turning signal.
On another note the growth is way out of control. If you slow this down maybe you could help traffic situation.

    • Timely? Tell that to the people who were just in a wreck on covered bridge and S. Murphy last week. This is about 10 years late. That area is a nightmare between 4:30-6:00. They need to close the cut through road between white oak church and the community center. That intersection of basically 3 roads is horrendous.

      • This is nothing but a bandaid! The problem is that in every home that is built, resides multiple people that need to Drive somewhere else, in order to earn a living to pay their mortgage. Lets have a mandate to create a location for a job for every home built. Our county needs more manufacturing! Johnston county should be more than just a place to sleep for people working in Wake and Durham counties!

  2. I really hope they do a better job then all the road work that’s been done around here lately with the potholes, bumps and wavy lines. Seems the lowest bidder and least competent have been doing our roads.

  3. This will have zero effect on the numerous wrecks, traffic and congestion aslong as the uncontrolled growth in the area continues. The construction alone will cause more problems but I guess it’s a necessary evil. Too little…..too late.

  4. Maybe if people wouldn’t drive like the world didn’t revolve around them, there wouldn’t be a need? Doesn’t matter what kind of improvements are made, people will find a way to complain.

    • I dare you to turn left onto covered bridge from castleberry at 5pm…if you aren’t driving like f1, then you aren’t turning left.

      • i live there. i’m very well aware. Again, if people turning left onto castleberry from covered bridge were courteous enough to let people in prior to turning, it wouldn’t be as horrible. People wanted a light, we are getting a light. Still complaints.
