An employee of Johnston County Schools is the latest victim of an internet scam.
The Smithfield resident reported that she was on her Facebook account recently and saw a message from what appeared to be a friend alerting her that she had won $150,000 and that she would be contacted very soon by a person called “Mr. Briggs” to claim her prize.
The victim said a short time later she received a Facebook message from Mr. Briggs about the large prize. To claim her winnings, the scammer said she needed to send in $1,090 to cover processing and fees associated with the $150,000 prize.
Unfortunately the victim sent the $1,090 before realizing she had been scammed. Authorities say it is unlikely she will be able to get her money back. The victim works for Johnston County Schools but the scam was not associated with the school system.
