Johnston County Teacher Margie Riedel Launches Bid For N.C. House

CLAYTON – Margie Riedel, a Johnston County teacher and local business professional, has announced her candidacy for the North Carolina House of Representatives District 26 seat.

Riedel, a second-grade teacher and realtor, made the announcement surrounded by supporters including teachers, friends and family after officially filing for office on Dec. 2. She has lived in Johnston County for nearly 20 years.

Riedel said her experience in public education and business would guide her approach if elected.

“I have spent years as an educator and a public advocate, and I know firsthand what our communities need to succeed,” Riedel said in the announcement. She said she hopes to focus on policies affecting families, seniors and local communities.

Riedel also cited her work in real estate as contributing to her understanding of the region’s growth and housing needs.

“Managing legislation and state budgets requires real-world business acumen,” she said. “My personal mission to fight for better pay for our teachers and help families put down roots in our community gives me the critical skills necessary to understand our community needs and negotiate on behalf of everyone in District 26.”

Riedel moved to Clayton 16 years ago with her husband. Their two sons attended Johnston County Public Schools. She has taught in the state for nearly two decades.

Riedel said the county’s rapid growth has created new demands for state lawmakers.

“Johnston County is one of the fastest growing counties in the state, and ‘more of the same’ policies in Raleigh will not hold up to our expanding needs,” she said.

Riedel will challenge incumbent District 26 NC House Rep. Donna White of Clayton in the March 3, 2026 primary. The filing period remains open through noon Friday, Dec. 19.
