A pulmonologist/intensivist with special training in diagnosing lung cancer has joined the medical staff at Johnston Health.
Mir Mustafa Ali, M.D. is now seeing patients and doing consults at the hospitals in Smithfield and Clayton. His practice, Ali Lung Clinic, is located in Smithfield.
Dr. Ali’s brother, Mir Omar Ali, and their father, Mir Mumtaz Ali, are also pulmonologists who specialize in treating patients with lung diseases and those in the intensive care unit. They are also members of the medical staff, and have practices in Smithfield and Clayton.
The youngest Ali received his medical degree from Deccan College of Medical Sciences in Hyderabad, India. He completed an internal medicine residency at the University of South Carolina/Palmetto Health in Columbia, S.C. Afterward he did a three-year fellowship in pulmonary and critical care medicine at the University of Kentucky in Lexington, and was chief fellow during his final year.
Ali is board certified in pulmonary disease, internal medicine and critical care.
Born in Chicago, Ali grew up wanting to be a doctor. As a youngster, he often visited and later rounded in the hospital with his father.
In his practice, Ali says he treats patients the way he would like to be treated. “I spend time making sure patients understand their illnesses and know what to do,” he adds. “Counseling is an important part of my practice.”
Ali says he enjoys seeing a range of patients, from those who are struggling with lung disease and asthma to those who are critically ill in the ICU. “Lung cancer is common in our county,” he adds. “This is an area where I can help.”
Ali is also an assistant professor at Campbell University School of Medicine.
He and his wife, Nooria, live in Raleigh and have two children, ages 1 and 3. She is working toward a master’s degree at Campbell University.
