Kenly Police: $258,000 In Stolen Copper Found Inside Trailer

KENLY, N.C. – A cargo theft investigation led Kenly Police to a stolen semi-trailer and the recovery of approximately $258,000 worth of copper wire, according to Police Chief James Ayers.

The investigation began Friday after Kenly Police received information about a suspected cargo theft organization believed to be operating across multiple jurisdictions.

Kenly officers began working with local and out-of-state law enforcement agencies and later located a stolen 53-foot J.B. Hunt semi-trailer. Police determined both the trailer and its cargo had been reported stolen.

Investigators then located the alleged driver at a local truck stop.

Police said the man struggled briefly with officers before being taken into custody. A handgun was reportedly found concealed on him during the arrest.

The driver was identified as Jarrel Lamont Nightingale, 41, of Florida.

Officers obtained a search warrant for the trailer and, during the search, located approximately $258,000 worth of stolen copper wire, according to Kenly Police.

Nightingale was charged with felony possession of stolen goods or property, felony possession of a stolen motor vehicle and carrying a concealed gun.

He was placed under a $20,000 secured bond at the Johnston County Detention Center in Smithfield.

Major A. Dixon, Detective Sgt. K. Taylor, Officer Hicks and Officer Reed were involved in the investigation.

Chief Ayers said the Selma and Four Oaks police departments also assisted.

“This case is a great example of what can be accomplished when law enforcement agencies work together as a team to combat criminal activity that crosses jurisdictional and state lines. Cargo theft is a major criminal enterprise that impacts businesses, communities, and our economy. In this case, our officers and partnering agencies were able to work together to recover a large amount of stolen property and take a suspect into custody. One of the most effective ways to combat large-scale cargo theft is through communication, cooperation, and teamwork among law enforcement agencies. I am extremely proud of the professionalism demonstrated by everyone involved in this investigation.” Chief Ayers said.

The investigation remains ongoing as Kenly Police and partnering agencies continue looking into the suspected cargo theft operation.

Chief Ayers said additional arrests are possible.
