Police Concerned About Attempted Semi Trailer Theft, Odd Behavior Of Suspects

WILSON’S MILLS – Wilson’s Mills Police are investigating an unusual attempted larceny and have notified other law enforcement agencies in the area to be on alert.

A white semi tractor (left) attempted to steal a trailer (right) from the rear parking lot of the Handy Mart in Wilson’s Mills on December 22, 2024.

On December 22 around 9:57pm, two unknown males dressed in black hooded sweatshirts and sweatpants drove a white semi tractor with a sleeper compartment behind the Handy-Mart convenience store on Wilson’s Mills Road at US 70.

The suspects attempted to connect the semi truck to a pneumatic trailer in the parking lot. After an unsuccessful attempt, the assailants approached a witness in the parking lot.

Using a translation app on their cell phone, the suspects asked the witness to help them connect to the trailer. They claimed they wanted to “practice pulling the trailer around” for a job with Amazon.

Skeptical, the witness walked to the store and reported the incident before leaving. The witness said the two suspects appeared to speak Russian.

The suspects pulled around and tried to connect to the trailer again. In both instances, the driver of the tractor operated the vehicle with awkward, jerky movements. They eventually drove away in the white tractor without the trailer due to a locking mechanism on the trailer that prevented the theft.

Police Chief A.Z. Williams said, based on the unusual theft choice and odd behavior of the suspects, investigators are concerned whether the suspects were attempting to steal the trailer to transport illicit contraband or dangerous materials.

Police are also working to see if the road tractor used in the attempted theft may have been stolen.

Anyone with information that could help Wilson’s Mills Police identify the suspects is urged to contact Detective Sgt. D. Hilliard at dhilliard@wilsonsmillsnc.org or 919-938-3885, ext. 240.
