CLAYTON – A Johnston County youth, who has been racing four wheelers since the age of five, recently brought home two national championships.
Dylan Young Jones competes in the national New East Extreme District Track Series and locally in the East Coast Extreme Dirt Track Series. Dylan races for Wood Well Done Racing owned by Kyle and Brandie Robertson of Clayton. They have been Dylan’s top sponsor since day one and a major asset to his success.
His proud parents are Eric and Christina Jones of Clayton.
“It has been almost eight years since Dylan began racing and it is truly his passion!” said Christina Jones. “When we first put Dylan on a shifter at the beginning of the 2020 race season, we did not know what to expect but man did he prove to us we made the right decision. Unfortunately his 2021 race season was cut short after an ATV accident in Ohio, but the comeback in 2022 would just prove to Dylan exactly what he was cable of. Dylan moved up that year to a more competitive class and was able to finish 2nd in points in both the 200/400 class and the 12-15 class. Dylan has not won a national championship since 2018; however he has podiumed 39 times since 2018. We have instilled in Dylan that winning is not everything and the only way to get better is to push yourself harder.”
“We moved Dylan up a lot faster than most parents would because we felt comfortable with his riding ability and knew he could handle it. The only way to get better is to race against faster competition. Over the past few years, it has been all about learning and improving. This past weekend he was able to accomplish something that has been a long time coming and that is bringing home not one, but two national championships for the 2023 Race Season,” Christina added. Dylan won Championships for the 200/400 and for his 12-15 age group.”
“Anyone in racing will tell you, it’s all about being consistent,” his mother added.
The family has traveled to races as far away as Virginia, Maryland, Ohio, and Michigan this season.
Dylan is a seventh grader at Swift Creek Middle School and is on the Honor Roll. He enjoys baseball and travel baseball.
His grandparents are David and Lisa Nelms of Angier and Stan and Lisa Jones of Clayton.
Today (Friday), also happens to be Dylan’s 13th birthday. Happy Birthday Dylan!
