HARNETT COUNTY, N.C. – Mahogany Newkirk has been a trailblazer for much of her high school career.

A student at Harnett Early College, she served on the Yearbook Club, on Student Council, and was a member of the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society, National Honor Society, and Golden Key International Honor Society. While at the Early College, she also dual-enrolled at Central Carolina Community College.

Her real passion, though, lies in the arts.

She plays both piano and bass guitar and is a self-taught music producer.

Not only is Newkirk musically inclined, but she also creates visual art as well, focusing on digital artwork and graphic design.

This month, Newkirk will conclude her high school career with more than just a high school diploma.

In addition to graduating from Harnett Early College, she will also be earning her Associate in Arts through the dual enrollment program.

“It has been a privilege to watch Mahogany Newkirk develop into such an outstanding and motivated young woman,” Principal Dr. Jasmine Evans said. “She exemplifies the values of Harnett County Early College through her hard work, leadership, humility, and dedication to excellence. Beyond her impressive academic accomplishments, what truly sets Mahogany apart is her character, perseverance, and the positive influence she has on those around her.”

Newkirk’s academic accomplishments, talent, work ethic, dedication and leadership skills gained the attention of schools nationwide. So much so that she was offered up to $3 million in academic scholarships to further her education.

“Mahogany’s dedication, perseverance, leadership, and academic excellence have made her a standout student and a positive example for young people throughout our community,” Celestine Williams, Newkirk’s mother, said.

With an abundance of educational opportunities in front of her, Newkirk had a difficult decision to make.

This fall, she’ll continue her educational journey and continue to pursue her passion for the arts at the Savannah College of Art and Design.

“We are incredibly proud of all she has achieved and look forward to seeing the continued success and impact she will have in the future,” said Evans.
