Lower Speed Limit Planned For Portion Of U.S. 301 In Selma
SELMA, N.C. – The speed limit along a section of South Pollock Street (U.S. 301) could be reduced from 45 mph to 35 mph this fall following action by the Selma Town Council.
The council approved a resolution requesting the N.C. Department of Transportation reduce the speed limit on U.S. 301 from Ricks Road south to the Smithfield town limits. The current speed limit along that section is 45 mph.
Andrew Barksdale, public relations officer for NCDOT, said the department will ask the N.C. Board of Transportation to approve the speed limit reduction during its October meeting.
If approved, NCDOT will update and replace the speed limit signs sometime this fall.
Until the state acts and the new signs are installed, the existing 45 mph speed limit remains in effect.
In its resolution, the Selma Town Council cited increased pedestrian and bicycle activity along the corridor, as well as traffic entering and exiting businesses. Council members said reducing the speed limit would improve safety for pedestrians, bicyclists and motorists.

Another reason to hate Selma…
This area is already heavily patrolled for speeding, and with the mayor being accused of demanding the cops write more tickets this just smacks of a push for more revenue.
If it was about safety they’d have the DOT fix all the bad pavement.
Speeding is an issue and as a sixty year old limits are the only things that help police manage the area when it is broken.
Only pedestrian and bicycle actvity I see in that area is from the homeless…
They need to worry about paving the dang roads!!! Probably can’t go 45 mph anyway they are soo bad!!!
Thank you!! It’s like off roading through there. The only section that’s half decent is the 45mph section so it only figures local government would ruin that for commuters too.
There need to be sidewalks and bike lanes too.
The Food Lion , Carroll Pharmacy area of Hwy 301 to Wellons St., going across, is scary. My mother was hit by a truck on Saturday morning, on the left driver side and she has a broken thumb/arm area, and her small SUV was totaled. This was in Smithfield.
I was caught in the traffic jam while EMS cleared that accident. Hope your mother recovers quickly!
