CLAYTON – Two Johnston County sheriff’s deputies are on paid administrative leave after shooting an armed man.
Around 9:31pm Tuesday, the Johnston County Sheriff’s Office was dispatched to 101 Bright Leaf Drive, off Barber Mill Road near Clayton, for a suicidal person. A second 911 call stated a family member was armed and threatening to harm himself and shoot responding deputies.
When deputies arrived, the man fled on foot followed by the officers. The officers encountered the man, armed with multiple firearms, in a field behind the residence.
Deputies attempted to talk with the individual, however he would not comply with demands to remove his hands from his firearms, according to Johnston County Sheriff’s Major Jeff Caldwell. The two deputies were forced to discharge their weapons resulting in the man being shot, Major Caldwell said in a news release.
The man was transported to Wake Medical Center with serious but non-life threatening injuries.
As standard protocol, the North Carolina State Bureau of investigation was requested to respond to conduct an independent investigation.
Both deputies are currently on paid administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation.
The name of the man involved in the altercation was not released.
Great job joco deputies trying to keep our streets safe. Live off country lane never know what’s going on.
If your loved one is suicidal, please never call the police- get in touch with their counselor or therapist or someone with mental health training – but never ever call the police. Unless you want your loved one dead because that is probably going to be the outcome.
Police are rarely trained to handle mental health situations…
i 100% agree with this as of someone who had mental health issues and wanted to kill myself always call the suicide prevention line or someone who is trained in mental health care! if i was to tell someone i called the police to somebody who was wanting to kill other people and themselves then yes call the police but if they are saying to harm them and others then call mental healthcare workers or a prevention line. mental health services are there for a reason!
if they harm themselves call someone who is trained in mental health care.*
Sucidal doesn’t always mean that they were mental. The article says nothing about the person being mentally unstable or having physical problems.
