Man Charged After Allegedly Entering Disabled Resident’s Home

SMITHFIELD, N.C. – A blind Smithfield man was startled Sunday afternoon when a stranger allegedly ran through his unsecured front door, entered his home and refused to leave.

The incident was reported around 3:30 p.m. Aug. 9 at a residence in West Smithfield.

The disabled homeowner called Smithfield Police and reported an unknown man had entered his residence and would not move.

Officers arrived and found the suspect, identified as Marquail Lamont Currie, 33, still at the home.

Currie reportedly told officers someone had been chasing him, prompting him to enter the residence. Police said they found no evidence anyone had been pursuing him.

Police also said Currie appeared to have consumed drugs and/or alcohol.

Currie was taken to Johnston Medical Center in Smithfield for a medical evaluation. After being cleared, he was transported to the Johnston County Detention Center.

He was charged with misdemeanor breaking and entering and held on a $500 secured bond.

The homeowner was not injured during the incident.
