Man Charged With Rape After Woman Escapes Through Window

SMITHFIELD, N.C. — A Smithfield man is facing multiple charges, including first-degree forcible rape, following an alleged assault.
Demetrius A. DeVaughn, 44, of Old Farm Road, was arrested April 15 at his residence, according to the Smithfield Police Department.
Police said the incident occurred April 13 when an adult woman was at DeVaughn’s home and was allegedly sexually assaulted. Authorities said the woman was able to escape by jumping out of a bedroom window when DeVaughn left the room.
Investigators allege DeVaughn caught up with the woman outside and dragged her into the backyard. A nearby resident reportedly witnessed the altercation and heard the victim calling for help, prompting a 911 call.
Officers responded and located the victim at the scene, but DeVaughn had already left the area.
Following an investigation, warrants were obtained for his arrest. He was located April 15 and charged with first-degree forcible rape, second-degree rape, and a crime of domestic violence.
DeVaughn was also served with an order for arrest for failing to appear in Wake County District Court on a misdemeanor larceny charge. That case stems from a November 13, 2025 incident at WakeMed Hospital, where he is accused of stealing a Batman puzzle and a teddy bear valued at $50 from a gift shop.
He is being held without bond at the Johnston County Detention Center in Smithfield.
