Man Fatally Shot During Confrontation With Harnett County Deputy

LILLINGTON – The NC State Bureau of Investigation is investigating the fatal shooting of a 31 year-old man by a Harnett County deputy sheriff.

The shooting happened around 1:35pm Wednesday in the 3300 block of Neills Creek Road near Lillington.

According to the Harnett County Sheriff’s Office, Deputy Calvin Johnson was dispatched to a domestic disturbance involving an individual with a knife threatening the person calling 911.

When Deputy Johnson arrived at the scene, the male reportedly challenged the officer with a knife. After multiple attempts to deescalate the situation, Deputy Johnson fired his weapon to prevent the man from further advancing towards him with the knife.

Deputies performed medical care until EMS arrived and transported the man to Wake Medical Center where he later died.

The man was identified as Leo Warren Reeves of Lillington.

Deputy Johnson, age 40, was hired in June 2024 by the Harnett County Sheriff’s Office and has over 11 years of prior law enforcement experience.

As standard procedure with an officer-involved shooting, the NC SBI is conducting an investigation into the incident.
