Man Trying To Shoot Snake Accidentally Shoots Wife, Deputies Say
JOHNSTON COUNTY, N.C. — A Johnston County woman was accidentally struck by shotgun pellets after her husband fired at a snake near their chicken coop, according to the Johnston County Sheriff’s Office.
Deputies responded to a reported shooting at the couple’s home in the McGee’s Crossroads area around 8:23 p.m. Monday.
Investigators said a 74-year-old man was attempting to kill a snake that had gotten into the family’s chicken coop. He retrieved a .410-gauge shotgun and fired at the snake.
The shotgun pellets ricocheted, striking the man’s 73-year-old wife, who was standing nearby.
The woman was transported to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
The husband and wife gave consistent accounts of what happened, and an eyewitness corroborated their statements. Investigators determined the shooting was accidental.
No criminal charges are expected to be filed.
The Sheriff’s Office report did not indicate whether the snake was killed.
