Harnett County Assistant District Attorney Suzanne Matthews defeated lawyer Nicolle T. Phair, 9,282 to 3,118 in Tuesday night’s primary election.
Matthews became the Republican nominee for District Attorney in Prosecutorial District 12, representing both Harnett and Lee counties. All 23 precincts reported.
“I feel great,” Matthews said. “The support from the community and voters has been incredible. I’m honored that they have put their faith and trust in me to carry us forward into the general election from the Republican primary standpoint. I’m looking forward to preparing for that and I’m excited about November and the general election.”
Matthews campaigned on reducing crime through building relationships with the community and strengthening the criminal justice system. She pledged to work together with community stakeholders and provide the district attorney’s office with the resources it needs to better serve its citizens.
Vote totals remain unofficial until a canvass of the ballots is conducted. The canvass is set for 11 a.m. Friday, March 13 in Conference Room A located at 420 McKinney Parkway, Lillington, NC 27546. The meeting is open to the public.
