Mayor Proclaims Nov. 1 National Family Literacy Day In Smithfield

SMITHFIELD — Mayor Andy Moore has proclaimed Nov. 1 as National Family Literacy Day in Smithfield, encouraging families to make reading and learning a shared activity.

Moore presented the proclamation during the Oct. 6 Town Council meeting.

National Family Literacy Day was established by Congress in 1994 and marks its 32nd anniversary this year.

The observance highlights the importance of reading and learning for the entire family and the role parents can play in a child’s education.

Communities across the country recognize the day through activities such as read-a-thons, book drives, workshops and family programs at schools, libraries and community centers.

The Smithfield proclamation also notes that many adults struggle with reading and writing and that stronger literacy skills can improve confidence and expand opportunities.

Mayor Moore encouraged residents to read together as a family and recognized local librarians, educators and literacy service providers for their work in strengthening literacy in the community.

The proclamation also recognized the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution for its support of literacy and educational programs.
