SMITHFIELD – A medical issue may have played a factor in a head on collision between a JCATS bus and SUV. The accident happened Friday, May 10 around 10:18am on N. Brightleaf Boulevard near Canterbury Road.
Smithfield Police said an 87 year-old man was operating a black 2022 GMC SUV northbound when it crossed over the middle turn lane and into the southbound lanes colliding with a southbound 2021 Ford JCATS bus.
The two occupants in the bus, the driver and passenger, were transported to Johnston Medical Center in Smithfield for treatment of non-life threatening injuries.

The elderly SUV driver and a 65 year-old passenger were rushed to WakeMed in Raleigh with serious injuries.
Police are investigating whether a medical issue may have been a contributing factor.
